Sten is the Strategic Advisor to the CEO and Head of the innovation track - NEXT - at the world's flagship film industry platform - Marche Du Film of the Festival de Cannes as well as Chief Curator of the Picture This conference in Copenhagen, produced by the National Film School of Denmark. He annually curates an invitation-only rendezvous with the best European tech innovators and the Commissioner of Internal Market of the EU, is the Advisory Board member for the Future Media Hubs, an innovation network of 40+ top European media companies. Since 2024 he is the Director of Tallinn Digital Summit (TDS), an invitation only format for political, technology, business and public sector leaders, hosted by the Prime Minister of Estonia.
Sten's career has seen him pioneering a co-production memorandum with the governments of South Korea and Estonia, and genre film co-productions between South Korea, Japan, and Europe. He steered the first genre film festival HOFF in Estonia, and media technology & startup innovation hub Storytek in North Eastern Europe, co-developed the future strategy whitepaper of the European Film and Media and Technology sector for Vice President Ansip of the European Commission, set in motion a large scope Horizon 2020 backed investment vehicle STADIEM to support film and media innovators in Europe, created and managed multi-million innovation projects between creativity and technology. He is one of the instigators of CresCine - a 36 month, Horizon Europe funded program set to increase the competitiveness of content industires in small European markets.
As a Strategist he has developed several government level frameworks, whitepapers and strategies for organisations such as Startup Estonia, Estonian Government moonshot lab Accelerate Estonia, Estonian Ministry of Culture, and the European Commission.
In 2020 he commissioned and curated an exceptional performance of Academy award-winning composer, artist and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto for the Meet the Composers section of the Marche Du Film/ Festival de Cannes, and most recently curated the launch of a new Decentralized Pictures film fund in Cannes by Roman Coppola and the American Zoetrope's DCP Foundation. Sten also served as Executive producer of MURALS, an immersive 3D experience on the impact of the invasion of Ukraine inspired and documented by the murals of Banksy created across Ukraine in the summer of 2023, as well as devised a high-level Ukrainian tech and creative mission to Cannes. The work won the Audience Award at BFI London Festivals Expanded section. He has currently produced, associate produced and advised seven feature lenght, and award winning productions.
Since 2023 Sten has been the curator for future pop at the flagship pop and digital art gallery Poco (poco. art) which features a collection of 450 pop icons from Dada to Warhol, Hirst, Kusama, Banksy, and more. Sten oversees the gallery’s immersive, generative, and digital art sections and activities.
Sten has held keynotes and moderated fireside chats, masterclasses, and interviews at many of the world’s top festivals and conferences including with President Kaljulaid, Nicholas Winding Refn (director of Drive), Kim Je Woon, Roman Coppola, The Royal Institution in London, DLD, Twin Global, The Estonia Prime Minister’s Digital Summit, the EU Presidency Summit, the European Film Forum. Cannes, Berlin, Busan, Taipei, Tokyo, Bucheon, Frankfurt, Tallinn, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Montreal, and Geneva. He speaks Estonian, English, Finnish, and Japanese, is an avid film lover and a volunteer medical first respondent, whilst caring passionately for the future of artistic storytelling between creativity and technology.
